Kelowna Student Earns Coveted Loran Scholarship
Alaa Alaiwah, a bright student from Rutland Senior Secondary School in Kelowna, has recently made headlines after winning a prestigious Loran Scholarship worth $100,000. Alaiwah will graduate in June and is set to embark on his academic journey at UBC Okanagan this fall. Out of an impressive pool of 5,400 Canadian applicants, he was one of the select few, highlighting not only his academic prowess but also his commitment to impacting the world positively.
Overcoming Challenges Through Community Support
Alaiwah’s path to this achievement wasn't straightforward. Arriving in Canada as a middle schooler with limited knowledge of English, he faced numerous hurdles adjusting to a new language and culture. However, he expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support he received from his school community. “At Rutland Middle School, and especially at Rutland Senior Secondary, I found a community that supported me, challenged me, and helped me grow,” Alaiwah said. His growth was notably influenced by his experiences in the Lifeguard Academy and a dedicated teacher, Allen McNabb.
The Loran Scholarship: More Than Just Financial Aid
The Loran Award stands out as a unique scholarship that emphasizes character, leadership, and commitment to community service over mere academic grades. Alaiwah explained the significance of being a Loran Scholar: “It means taking the initiative to lead meaningful change while constantly learning and growing through feedback.” This holistic approach makes the Loran Scholarship not just about monetary support but also about personal development and future leadership opportunities, including valuable mentorship and summer programs.
A Bright Future Ahead in Nursing
With plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Alaiwah not only aspires to learn but aims to have a tangible impact on healthcare. His dedication to making a difference stems from personal experiences and a desire to contribute positively to community health initiatives. “What excites me most about the future is learning alongside people who want to make a difference,” he reflects.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Alaa’s story serves as an inspiration to many young people in Kelowna and beyond. By embracing the challenges that come with moving to a new country, he has illustrated that perseverance and community support can lead to extraordinary achievements. As he embarks on this next chapter of life, his pride in his roots is evident. “From coming from nothing to building my path, I am proud to say I am a Rutland boy,” he declares passionately.
How Alaiwah’s Journey Resonates Locally
The heartwarming story of Alaiwah aligns with a broader narrative of empowerment within the Kelowna community. His success reassures residents about the impact of local schools and mentorship on student development. It also reflects a collective commitment to nurturing future leaders who not only excel academically but also possess a strong sense of social responsibility.
