Celebrating Arts and Community: The Living Things Festival Returns to Kelowna
The Living Things International Arts Festival is making its grand return to Kelowna, igniting the local art scene for its 10th anniversary. From January 20 to February 1, the festival will unfold across notable venues such as the Rotary Centre for the Arts, Kelowna Community Theatre, and Black Box Theatre. This year’s lineup promises a rich tapestry of contemporary theatre, dance, and performance art that not only entertains but also invites reflection and connection.
A Diverse Array of Performances Awaits
This festival is not just another event on the calendar; it’s a celebration of diverse forms of expression. At the heart of the festival is Play Dead by People Watching Collective and Punch Line by Jacques Poulin-Denis, both part of the RCA Presents season at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Additionally, the highly anticipated PINA film will captivate audiences with its unique blend of physical storytelling and stunning visuals. Festival favorites like Objects in Motion, showcasing international short films, will also take center stage, highlighting the global nature of this artistic platform.
Spotlight on Unique Narratives
Highlighting personal stories is a significant theme of this festival. Renowned theatre artist Amy Amantea will present Through My Lens on January 23 and 24 at the Kelowna Community Theatre. Drawing from her experience as a visually impaired artist—possessing merely 2% vision in one eye—Amantea's performance merges conversation and hospitality with expressive art, allowing for intimate connections with the audience.
Engaging Workshops and Community Involvement
The Black Box Theatre will host a variety of engaging workshops, including a Brazilian Samba Batucada community workshop led by Negin Bahrami. This inclusive approach not only showcases diverse cultural expressions but also encourages community participation, embodying the festival's spirit of togetherness and celebration.
Reflections from the Organizers
Eliseo Santillan, managing director of the festival, shared his heartfelt connection to this event. “Four years ago, when I decided to come to Canada, being part of something like the 10th anniversary of the Living Things International Arts Festival is not something I ever imagined I would be doing,” he stated. Coming from Mexico City, Santillan praises Kelowna’s vibrant arts scene, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the local cultural tapestry.
