Kelowna’s New Era: Oak View Group to Operate Prospera Place
In a significant transition for the City of Kelowna, Oak View Group Canada (OVG) has been chosen as the new operator for Prospera Place and MNP Place, set to take effect in 2029. This decision marks a pivotal moment as the city seeks to modernize these facilities and enhance their offerings for residents and visitors alike.
The Path to Selection: A Competitive Process
The journey to selecting OVG began in January 2024 when the City of Kelowna informed the current operator, GSL Group, that a search for a new operator would commence. Amidst this competitive landscape, GSL Group submitted a proposal aiming to secure its future with upgraded plans for Prospera Place, which opened its doors as Skyreach Place in 1999.
Once the bidding process officially opened in August 2024, a shortlist was created in February 2025, featuring three operators: GSL Group, OVG Canada, and ASM Global. A careful evaluation of proposals led to OVG being declared the top-ranked operator, demonstrating the company's capability in managing diverse venues across Canada, including the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton.
Envisioning the Future of Prospera Place
City officials, including Derek Edstrom, Divisional Director of Partnership & Investments, expressed a strong commitment to enhancing the current experiences within these venues. “We aim to enhance the facility’s offerings and maintain its status as a premier location for events and entertainment in Kelowna,” Edstrom noted. OVG's vision includes significant upgrades to premium offerings, innovative hospitality services, and an expanded year-round programming that would transform Prospera Place into not just an arena, but a vibrant entertainment destination.
Acknowledging Past Contributions
While the future looks promising, the City is also grateful for the contributions of GSL Group over the past 25 years. The ongoing partnership with GSL will continue until the official transition in 2029, ensuring that events and community services are not disrupted during this period. The City has pledged to work proactively with GSL to ensure smooth operations, acknowledging GSL’s role in enriching Kelowna's cultural life and downtown vibrancy.
Key Advantages for the Community
The operational change is anticipated to not only modernize the facilities but also attract significant events to Kelowna. This enhancement is crucial for a city that thrives on tourism and community engagement. OVG’s proven success in other Canadian markets is seen as an asset that could breathe new life into Prospera Place and MNP Place, revitalizing them for future generations.
Contributing to a Thriving Downtown
As Kelowna prepares for this transition, the broader benefits of a revitalized Prospera Place extend beyond entertainment. It is about fostering a sense of community, building connections, and ensuring that the downtown area remains a lively and essential hub for residents and visitors. The city’s investment in its venues reflects a commitment to cultural growth and development.
The Call for Community Engagement
As this exciting new chapter unfolds, residents are encouraged to engage with the process and stay informed about developments as OVG begins its preparations. The successful implementation of these changes will depend on community feedback and involvement. Participating in discussions, attending events, and voicing opinions will contribute to the continuous enhancement of what Prospera Place can offer to everyone.
