The Heart and Soul of Central Okanagan Search and Rescue
The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) team closed out 2025 as its third-busiest year, responding to a staggering 104 emergency calls. This remarkable number showcases not only their dedication but also the increasing demand for search and rescue services in the region. Among the year’s highlighted operations were five body recoveries and a noteworthy eight-day landslide search on Westside Road that gained national attention, emphasizing the complex and often heart-wrenching nature of their work.
Community Heroes on the Front Lines
Throughout the year, COSAR’s volunteering force, comprised of 65 passionate individuals, logged an impressive total of 18,105 hours. Some members exceeded expectations significantly; one volunteer, for instance, amassed 1,281 hours across 43 separate activities, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment that not only benefits the community but also inspires others to contribute. The dedication is palpable, especially during challenging rescues, such as saving lost skiers and injured hikers, where every second counts.
Embracing Technology: Innovations in Rescue Operations
In response to evolving challenges, COSAR has embraced new technology to enhance effectiveness. In 2025, they upgraded their medical equipment and expanded their capabilities with drone technologies and underwater ROVs. The addition of Barrett, B.C.'s most-utilized SAR dog, further furthers their outreach, allowing for more precise and effective searches. These advancements not only increase their operational efficiency but also provide vital support during emergencies.
A Light-hearted Moment Amidst the Challenges
Among the demanding calls COSAR handled, one incident truly stood out for its humor—what responders thought was a rock climber in distress turned out to be a recreational singer. This light-hearted moment captured the hearts of many, going viral with 1.8 million Facebook views and gaining coverage in notable outlets like The New York Post. It showcases that even amidst the most serious duties, there is room for community engagement and humor.
Building Community Awareness and Preparedness
In focusing on community preparedness, COSAR organized outreach programs that reached over 200 local students through AdventureSmart initiatives. By educating young people about safety and awareness, they reinforce the importance of responsible outdoor activities, thus promoting safer lifestyles in the community.
Future Aspirations and Commitment
Looking ahead, COSAR is set to build a new hall with expected occupancy in fall 2027. This endeavor, supported by the Regional District of Central Okanagan and the City of Kelowna, aims to enhance their operational capabilities. Moreover, with increasing calls regarding mental health and persons-in-crisis situations, COSAR remains dedicated to being a 24/7 resource for the community, ensuring that help is always available when needed.
Join the Effort and Stay Safe!
As we step into a new year, COSAR extends heartfelt gratitude to their partners and the community. They encourage everyone to remain vigilant and prepared for emergencies, understanding that in times of crisis, being informed and ready can save lives. Consider spreading the word about COSAR's work, engaging in community activities, or even volunteering to support the vital services they provide.
